On this page I want to show you how I make my models, my
transformations. These transformations give me the best satisfaction.
I mean, what's the fun of spending money on a model, opening the door to
the showcase, putting the model in it, and closing the door again? I
like it more to spend a lot of time and energy, transforming a,
preferably cheap, model into something special and unique.
I want to show you my ideas, my struggles, my failures and (hopefully)
finally a nice result. If you would like to respond to this, don't
hesitate to mail me with your comments, your ideas and tips.

Je souhaite vous montrer sur cette page comment je fabrique mes modèles
car ces transformations me procurent le plus de plaisir.
Je m’explique. Qu’il y a t’il d’amusant à acheter une miniature, ouvrir sa
vitrine, y déposer son modèle et puis tout refermer ? J’aime beaucoup
mieux consacrer plein de temps et d’ énergie à la transformation un
modèle, de préférence sans grand frais, en quelque chose de spécial et
unique.
Je veux donc vous faire partager mes idées, tâtonnements et échecs, pour (
j’espère) finalement vous faire découvrir une belle réalisation.

So, someone by the name of Mario Marret has created this vehicle by
putting the cabin of a Citroën Type 55 on top of a Weasel, to be used
during a French Antarctic expedition, sometime in the late fifties.
This is interesting, but what is a Weasel? Let's learn more about it. So
I started seaching the web.
It turns out this Weasel is the nickname for a Studebaker M29 which was
developed during WWII for the transportation of troops in snowy
terrain.

I even managed to find a colour film which shows the unloading from a
ship of our CitroWeasel.

So far, my search for drawings of the Weasel wasn't very succesfull.
Nevertheless I started building a model. I took a model of a Type 23
from Ixo, the green tow truck. I think the cabin of a Type 55 is the
same as the Type 23, as far as the roof, back side, doors and front
windows are concerned. The model of the Type 23 has a big advantage and
that is the rim where the hood used to be. It's there already, so I
don't have to make that.
I sawed off the front end of the model, removed the grille and started
to build a new front end. I also started the design of the new bottom of
the model, using Tinkercad and printed it 3D on my Prusa MK3S. It took several tries before I found the
right shape.

Jusqu'à présent, ma recherche de dessins de la belette n'a pas été très
fructueuse. J'ai néanmoins commencé à construire un modèle. J'ai pris un
modèle de Type 23 d'Ixo, la dépanneuse verte. Je pense que l'habitacle
d'un Type 55 est le même que celui du Type 23, en ce qui concerne le
toit, l'arrière, les portes et les vitres avant. Le modèle Type 23 a un
gros avantage et c'est le bord où se trouvait le capot. C'est déjà là,
donc je n'ai pas besoin de le faire.
J'ai scié l'avant du modèle, retiré la calandre et commencé à construire
une nouvelle partie avant. J'ai également commencé la conception du
nouveau bas du modèle, en utilisant Tinkercad. Il m'a fallu plusieurs
essais avant de trouver la bonne forme.

I had the intention to design the tracks and undercarriage myself. But
then I found a design of a Weasel on Thingiverse. Wow!

The STL-file contained an entire Weasel in scale 1:100. I isolated the
tracks from the design and changed the scale to 1:43.

J'avais l'intention de concevoir moi-même les chenilles et le train de
roulement. Mais ensuite j'ai trouvé une épure sur Thingiverse. Ouah!

Le fichier STL contenait un plan entier à l'échelle 1:100. J'ai isolé
les chenilles du design et changé l'échelle à 1:43.

Using Tinkercad, I designed the chassis myself. The track assemblies are
connected to the chassis by 2 brass rods.

À l'aide de Tinkercad, j'ai conçu moi-même le châssis. Les ensembles
chenilles sont reliés au châssis par 2 tiges en laiton.

The previously designed parts will be placed on top of the chassis.
There are holes in all parts to be able to align everything.

Les pièces préalablement conçues seront placées sur le châssis. Il y a
des trous dans toutes les pièces pour pouvoir tout aligner.

Added the tracks and interior. The interior was modified, just one seat.
And a new engine cover and dashboard were made.

Ajout des chenilles et de l'intérieur. L'intérieur a été modifié, un
seul siège. Et un nouveau capot moteur et un nouveau tableau de bord ont
été réalisés.

I don't think white filament is the best colour to show things...
Anyway, here you see a screenshot of my Tinkercad design. Some parts,
like the headlights, are to be printed in different sizes, because at
that moment I didn't what would be the best size.

Je ne pense pas que le filament blanc soit la meilleure couleur pour
montrer les choses...
Quoi qu'il en soit, vous voyez ici une capture d'écran de ma conception
Tinkercad. Certaines pièces, comme les phares, doivent être imprimées
dans des tailles différentes, car à ce moment-là je ne savais pas quelle
serait la meilleure taille.

Here are some pictures of the cabin. I used Evergreen styrene to make a
new front end. Initially I cut a hole to fit the grille, but it turned
out the grille was sitting too deep. So I filled the gap again.

Voici quelques photos de la cabine. J'ai utilisé du styrène Evergreen
pour fabriquer une nouvelle face avant. Au départ, j'ai percé un trou
pour insérer la calandre, mais il s'est avéré que la grille était trop
profonde. J'ai donc à nouveau comblé le vide.

To make the part above the grille, I used putty.

Pour réaliser la partie au dessus de la calandre, j'ai utilisé du
mastic.

Test assembly. All looks good.

September 2023:
All the parts were painted, spraying can and brush. Parts like the
headlights and windscreen wipers were put in place. Assembly is nearly
ready now.
